Global Leaders Unite to Tackle Information Integrity Crisis

The M20 for G20 Media Summit concluded in Johannesburg this week, issuing a comprehensive Declaration that addresses the urgent need to combat a global crisis in the integrity of information. This initiative, convened by the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) and Media Monitoring Africa, highlights the shrinking spaces for independent news media and civic engagement, emphasizing the critical role of media in promoting peace and human rights.

During the summit, the alliance of over 50 international organizations underscored the importance of journalism as a public good, essential for ensuring information integrity and aligning with the goals set forth by the G20. The Declaration builds upon existing frameworks, notably the Windhoek Declaration of 1991, which advocates for a free and pluralistic African media, and aligns with the UN’s Global Principles for Information Integrity.

Addressing Critical Challenges

The Declaration identifies several pressing challenges currently facing the media landscape, outlined in eight policy briefs. These include:

– Information integrity
– The impact of Artificial Intelligence
– Media viability
– The safety of journalists
– The role of women in media
– The needs of children and marginalized groups

One of the key calls to action is for stakeholders in media and civil society to reinforce the highest standards of journalistic ethics to combat attacks on information integrity. The Declaration also encourages news organizations to actively promote and support independent media, particularly through key global events such as World News Day and the International Day for Universal Access to Information, both celebrated on September 28.

Next Steps for Implementation

This Declaration will be presented to G20 leaders at their upcoming summit in November 2025. In addition to the Declaration, a Media Integrity Monitoring Framework is set to be developed to track annual G20 commitments concerning information integrity, journalist safety, and media viability. An associated Integrity Index will also be introduced, allowing institutions to benchmark their progress and promote accountability.
