Brazilian Influencer Arrested for Alleged Drug Trafficking Operation
A Brazilian social media influencer, identified as Melissa Said, has been arrested on charges of leading a significant drug trafficking and money laundering operation. The 23-year-old, known for her presence on Instagram with over 340,000 followers, was taken into custody after being on the run following police raids on her properties in northeastern Brazil.
According to the Bahia Civil Police and reported by the Brazilian news outlet Correio, Said was apprehended while hiding at a friend’s residence in Bahia. The police operation, named Operation Erva Afetiva or “weed-loving,” aimed to dismantle her alleged criminal enterprise, which reportedly facilitated the distribution of cannabis and the laundering of illicit funds across Bahia and São Paulo.
The raids occurred on Wednesday, revealing a trove of evidence linked to drug trafficking. Authorities seized 1.4 kilograms of “skank” marijuana, 270 grams of hashish, along with digital scales, plastic bags, and two vehicles believed to be involved in the operation. Three suspected accomplices were also arrested, one of whom has been explicitly charged with drug trafficking.
The investigation into Said’s activities first began in 2024 after she was reportedly caught with drugs at an airport. It is alleged that she advised her followers on evading law enforcement during drug transport and even distributed “kits” containing joints in public spaces. The police have not disclosed the identity of the third individual arrested alongside Said.
Ernandes Junior, the director of the State Department for Prevention and Suppression of Drug Trafficking, emphasized the focus of the operation, stating, “The objective of this operation is to combat drug trafficking, with the main target being a digital influencer who promotes crime.” He added that Said was implicated not only in promoting drug use but also in the direct sale and distribution of narcotics, with suppliers based in São Paulo.
The legal consequences for Said could be severe. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison. Following her arrest, she is expected to undergo questioning with her lawyer and will remain in custody until her hearing.
In her last Instagram video, posted on October 2, 2023, Said discussed marijuana legalization while appearing to smoke what seemed to be a joint. Her public persona has often revolved around activism for cannabis legalization. Said was previously married to fellow influencer Tássio Bacelar, who tragically passed away in a bicycle accident in October 2023.
The investigation into her alleged criminal activities continues, as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the drug trafficking network linked to Said.
