Understanding Your Dog’s Barks: Insights from Pasadena Humane

Understanding a dog’s vocalizations is essential for pet owners seeking to build a strong bond with their furry companions. At Pasadena Humane, experts are shedding light on the various reasons behind dogs’ barks and how to address excessive barking effectively.
Skywalker, a gentle canine available for adoption, exemplifies the type of pet that would benefit from a supportive environment. This soulful dog is searching for a calm and patient home where he can thrive. While he may initially come across as shy, his affectionate nature shines through once trust is established. He enjoys simple pleasures, such as a comfortable spot to nap and a predictable routine. Skywalker is currently available for a 10-day adoption trial, allowing potential adopters to see his true character. More information can be found at pasadenahumane.org/adopt.
In a personal reflection, Chris Ramon, President and CEO of Pasadena Humane, recalls welcoming a puppy named Britney into his family. Despite their best efforts to crate train her, Britney’s vocalizations became a challenge. High-pitched barks indicated her desire for attention, while a series of barks signaled mealtime. Like many dogs, Britney’s vocalizations were her way of communicating needs and emotions.
According to Rochelle Guardado, the Animal Training Manager at Pasadena Humane, dogs vocalize for various reasons, including expressing emotions, seeking attention, or warning of perceived threats. The way a dog barks can vary significantly in pitch and volume, often reflecting their excitement, frustration, or stress.
While barking is a natural behavior, excessive barking can frustrate pet owners. Guardado emphasizes that understanding the root cause of the barking is crucial for addressing the issue. For instance, if a senior dog suddenly begins barking persistently, it may indicate cognitive decline, which should be discussed with a veterinarian. In contrast, a young dog may simply be seeking attention, which can often be managed with stimulating activities.
Pet owners may instinctively raise their voices in response to barking, but Guardado warns that this could reinforce the behavior. Dogs might interpret their owner’s raised voice as joining in the fun, making the situation worse. Instead, she suggests acknowledging the barking by rewarding the dog for their alertness when appropriate. For example, thanking a dog for signaling the arrival of a delivery can help reduce the intensity of their barking over time.
While some pet owners consider bark collars or other deterrents, these methods can inadvertently increase anxiety and fear in dogs. Guardado cautions against using punishment to eliminate barking, as it can lead to aggressive behaviors in dogs that are simply trying to communicate fear or discomfort.
When barking becomes problematic, seeking guidance from a certified dog trainer is recommended. Understanding the reasons behind a dog’s vocalizations can help pet owners respond effectively and compassionately.
Pasadena Humane offers a variety of training options for dogs of all ages, including both group and individual sessions. Those interested can visit pasadenahumane.org/training for more information on available programs.
As pet ownership continues to grow, understanding canine communication remains a vital skill for fostering a harmonious relationship between dogs and their owners.
