Scotts Valley Volleyball Secures SCCAL Title with Dominant Win

The Scotts Valley High School girls’ volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) title following a commanding victory against the San Lorenzo Valley team. The match, held on March 15, 2024, ended with scores of 25-10, 25-13, and 25-6, showcasing the Falcons’ dominance on the court.
Outside hitter Hayden Smith led the charge with an impressive performance, recording 12 kills and one block. Other key players included Rylee Giesen, who contributed eight kills, and both Riley Kilpatrick and Makayla McDonnell, who added five kills each, with McDonnell also achieving three blocks. The team’s libero, Dylan Wing, played a crucial role in defense, saving critical balls throughout the match.
Coach Mikayla Fish emphasized the need for improvement despite the victory. “We went into tonight’s game with the mindset of playing clean and playing efficiently,” she said. Fish noted that the team struggled with serving, which she identified as an area for improvement ahead of their next important match against Soquel. “The focus tonight was to get as many touches as possible in preparation for that match,” she added.
The match also provided an opportunity to assess the potential of younger players. Fish praised Stesha Nikolaeva, Shino Hashiguchi-Rosoff, and Maddie Pipal for their contributions during the game. “It was a great opportunity to see the potential coming up the ranks,” she stated.
Looking ahead, Scotts Valley has the chance to win the title outright if they defeat Soquel in their upcoming match at 18:30. A win would secure the championship without a tie, which Fish desires. “I want to win the title all on our own, no tie-breaker rules, no bylaws,” she asserted. The possibility of sharing the title with Santa Cruz is also on the table, as they face Harbor at the same time. Should both teams end up sharing the title, Santa Cruz would advance to the Central Coast Section as the league champion due to victories over Scotts Valley in previous matches.
As the season progresses, the excitement among the players and coaching staff continues to build. “Scotts Valley has never won league, so I’d be thrilled to make that happen this year,” Fish noted, highlighting the significance of the senior class. “They deserve that banner.”
In other matches on the same day, Harbor triumphed over Soquel with a score of 3-1, led by junior opposite Cecile Novembre, who contributed 21 kills and three blocks. The Pirates’ junior setter Gianna Fanara also excelled, recording 38 assists in the contest.
The girls’ volleyball landscape in the SCCAL is heating up as teams jockey for position in the final weeks of the season. With several matches remaining, the competitive spirit is palpable among players and coaches alike.
As the championship chase continues, the energy surrounding Scotts Valley High School’s volleyball program reflects a community eager for success and recognition. The Falcons’ upcoming match against Soquel promises to be a pivotal moment in their pursuit of SCCAL glory.
