Poplar Springs Elementary Celebrates Artistic Legacy and Growth

Poplar Springs Elementary in Meridian, Mississippi, continues to thrive as a hub of artistic expression and educational growth. Recently, a visit to the school highlighted its rich history and ongoing commitment to integrating the arts into the curriculum. The picturesque campus, set back from Poplar Springs Drive, is home to approximately 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
As I walked through the hallways, a colorful bench pillow caught my attention. The message, “Cool Kids Read Books,” accompanied by an illustration of stacked books, evoked fond memories of Barbara Walker, my third-grade teacher in the early 1960s. Walker introduced us to the world of storytelling through E.B. White’s beloved novel, “Charlotte’s Web.” Her engaging approach to literature sparked my own passion for writing and creativity, a legacy that Poplar Springs continues to nurture.
Modern Enhancements and Artistic Focus
The Meridian School District has made significant improvements to the facility over the years, enhancing its appeal and functionality. The school now features a second parking lot, a walking track, and numerous public art installations. These additions reflect a broader commitment to creating an enriching educational environment.
While specific academic performance data for the students is not publicly available, Poplar Springs takes pride in its strong emphasis on the arts. Over the past two decades, programs designed to promote artistic engagement, such as the “Giving Feast” charitable event and the annual Celebrate Arts Festival, have drawn positive attention. These initiatives are supported by outside grants and the active involvement of the parent-teacher group, helping to maintain the school’s reputation as a leader in arts education.
Research indicates that exposure to the arts—whether through music, visual arts, or performance—can enhance students’ abilities in core academic subjects. Lydia Brand, a second-year art teacher at Poplar Springs, emphasizes that the arts foster a sense of belonging among students. She rotates her classes through various art specialties, allowing each child to explore their creative potential.
Arts Integration in Education
On a recent Monday, students participated in a ballroom dancing session led by visiting artist Leslie Lee. Before teaching basic salsa steps, Lee engaged the students in a discussion about the role of dance during the Great Depression, highlighting how it provided joy and community during challenging times.
“What happened during the Great Depression? People were depressed. They didn’t have jobs,” Lee explained. “But they could still dance.” This integration of history and music exemplifies the school’s holistic approach to education.
While Poplar Springs’ commitment to the arts is a relatively recent official initiative, its roots can be traced back to earlier traditions. A preserved article from the Meridian Star from 1989 describes a Grandparents Day event where costumed second-graders performed in a musical production. The joy of the grandparents, many leaving with drawings made by their grandchildren, speaks to the enduring spirit of creativity that has always been part of Poplar Springs.
As the school year progresses, Poplar Springs Elementary continues to plant seeds of creativity and knowledge. With its dedication to the arts and its vibrant community, the school not only honors its past but also shapes a promising future for generations of students.
