Shawn Lavin emerged victorious in the Amherst Town Supervisor election held on November 4, 2025, defeating Republican challenger Dan Gagliardo. Lavin, who previously served as Deputy Town Supervisor and Councilmember, will succeed outgoing Supervisor Brian Kulpa, who is stepping down due to term limits. This election marked a significant success for the Democratic Party, which also secured two seats on the Town Board.

In the Town Board race, Democrats John Davis and Jack Kavanaugh claimed the top two positions, surpassing Republican candidates John Trabert and Mary Dormer. The outcomes indicate a strong preference for Democratic leadership among Amherst voters.

Dan Gagliardo, speaking from the Erie County Republican Committee’s election night headquarters in Williamsville, expressed gratitude to his supporters and reflected on his campaign experience. “I actually got better. I listened more. I had more empathy towards the residents out there, and we can only hope that they’re going to do the exact same thing when they’re in office,” he stated. Gagliardo emphasized the importance of ongoing scrutiny of the new administration’s actions.

During his victory speech, Lavin acknowledged the competitive nature of the campaign and respected Gagliardo’s efforts. “It was a spirited campaign, and I appreciate his gumption. Anybody who puts themselves out there, it’s not easy. I appreciate the race he ran,” Lavin remarked.

Former Supervisor Brian Kulpa shared his mixed emotions about stepping down. He reflected on his tenure, highlighting the need for revitalization in property development. “We had to get properties moving. We had to get redevelopment reignited,” Kulpa noted. He underscored the necessity of addressing stagnating property values and fostering investment opportunities for residents.

As Democrats celebrated their victories, the mood among their Republican opponents was somber yet hopeful. Trabert conveyed a desire for the newly elected officials to prioritize critical issues. “I hope that they work on the debt. I hope they work on the services. I hope they work on representing the people and serving the people,” he said.

The results from this election are indicative of a broader alignment among Amherst residents towards Democratic policies and leadership, setting the stage for the new administration’s initiatives over the coming term. With Lavin at the helm, the focus will likely shift toward addressing community needs and enhancing local governance in Amherst.
