Xavien Howard Joins Indianapolis Colts, Set to Play Miami in Week 1

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard has signed with the Indianapolis Colts, marking his return to the NFL after a year away from the game. The announcement came on August 18, 2025, and adds an intriguing storyline as Howard is scheduled to face his former team, the Dolphins, in Week 1 of the upcoming season.
The Dolphins will incur a dead cap hit of $15.699 million this season as a result of Howard’s departure. This financial obligation means Miami is effectively compensating Howard while he plays against them, adding a unique layer to their matchup on the Colts’ home turf.
Howard, who recently turned 32 in July, has enjoyed a successful career in the NFL, having spent his entire tenure with the Dolphins. His accolades include a first-team All-Pro selection, a second-team All-Pro nod, and four Pro Bowl appearances. Over his career, he has played in 100 games and started 99, with his impressive performance potentially placing him on the radar for the NFL Hall of Fame.
With career statistics that feature 29 interceptions, Howard had a notable two-year stretch where he was widely regarded as the top cornerback in the league. In 2022, he signed a five-year deal worth $50.69 million, which restructured his previous contract slated to pay him $39.3 million through 2024.
Despite his achievements on the field, Howard’s off-field challenges have been considerable. He is currently embroiled in legal issues, including a lawsuit related to allegations of sharing explicit content without consent. The case involves claims from a minor and the child’s mother, asserting that Howard sent inappropriate photos as part of a revenge plot. The lawsuit alleges that Howard acted with intimidation and has a history of similar conduct.
According to the Miami Herald, a recent court filing seeks to add the minor as a plaintiff in the ongoing case against Howard. The legal proceedings have drawn significant attention, particularly due to their serious nature.
As the NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on Howard as he transitions to his new team. His performance in Indianapolis will be closely watched, especially during the highly anticipated matchup against the Dolphins, where he will aim to showcase his enduring talent on the field.
The Colts are betting on Howard to bolster their defense, and his success could further enhance his legacy in the NFL as he seeks to cement his place in the sport’s history.
