Tyler O’Neill Struggles with Injuries Amid Orioles’ Disappointing Season
The Baltimore Orioles are grappling with the challenges of their 2023 season, particularly with outfielder Tyler O’Neill, who has faced multiple injuries since joining the team. Acquired during the offseason on a three-year, $49.5 million contract, O’Neill has already made two trips to the injured list in his first season, severely limiting his contributions on the field.
O’Neill, 30, has played only 36 games this season, posting a batting average of .211 with a slugging percentage of .398, including five home runs and 15 RBIs. This performance is disappointing, especially considering his previous season where he hit 31 home runs in just 113 games. The Orioles were aware of the risks associated with O’Neill’s injury history, which includes 14 previous trips to the injured list.
In a candid reflection, O’Neill expressed his frustration with the injuries. “It’s been a grind, man,” he said. “I’ve been injured a lot and just trying to fight my way back.” His ongoing struggle with a neck injury and subsequent shoulder issues has hindered his ability to maintain consistent performance.
The impact of these injuries has been evident in O’Neill’s swing mechanics. Interim manager Tony Mansolino noted that as O’Neill’s body endured wear and tear, he could not perform the necessary work in the batting cage to correct his swing. “Tyler is a needs-his-swing-to-feel-good guy,” Mansolino explained, highlighting the connection between O’Neill’s physical health and his batting performance.
Despite these setbacks, there are signs of recovery. After dealing with general soreness and missing additional games, O’Neill recently demonstrated improvement, recording multiple hits in three consecutive games. Over this period, he achieved a .600 batting average, hitting two home runs and a double against left-handed pitchers, an area where the Orioles had hoped he would excel.
As the Orioles (46-58) approach the trade deadline, they face a decision regarding their roster. With Cedric Mullins a potential trade candidate and Heston Kjerstad struggling in his debut season, O’Neill’s performance could greatly influence their strategy. His ability to regain form and contribute positively will be crucial for the team, especially with their focus shifting towards the 2026 season.
O’Neill’s contract includes an opt-out clause that he could exercise this winter, but doing so would require him to have an exceptional finish to the season. With $33 million remaining on his deal, many factors will play into his decision, including his health and performance.
The playoffs appear out of reach for the Orioles this year, but ensuring O’Neill’s health and strengthening his performance is vital for the organization’s future. As the team looks to rebound next season, O’Neill’s contributions will be pivotal in their quest for success.
