The Dalles Riverhawks Clinch Third Straight TVC Title with Dominant Wins
The Dalles High Riverhawks secured their third consecutive Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) title, continuing an impressive undefeated season with two decisive league victories last week. The Riverhawks, currently ranked No. 2, hold an unblemished record of 7-0 in the TVC and 13-0 overall.
On October 21, 2023, The Dalles triumphed over No. 5-ranked Gladstone with a score of 3-1. Junior forward and scoring leader Ariana Gonzalez netted two goals, while her teammate Alondra Romero contributed the third. This victory set the tone for an even more commanding performance on October 23, when they defeated Estacada 5-0. In this match, twin sisters Ariana and Lilyana Gonzalez led the attack, with Ariana scoring two goals and Lilyana contributing three. This win marked the Riverhawks’ 10th shutout of the season.
Under the guidance of Coach Colby Tonn, now in his 12th year, the Riverhawks displayed a consistent work ethic throughout the season. “The team just continued to work hard when they started practice at the beginning of the season,” Tonn stated. “Even though we’ve won league three years in a row now, the girls have continued to strive to get better and improve.”
Looking ahead, the Riverhawks are set to face Molalla on October 28, during their regular season finale and senior night. Molalla currently holds a record of 4-3 in the TVC and 9-5 overall.
The Riverhawks have also qualified for the 16-team Class 4A state playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. They are scheduled to host a first-round playoff game on November 4, 2023. “It’s a huge advantage being ranked No. 2, because then we’ll be hosting playoff games in the first round, the quarterfinals, and the semifinals,” Tonn explained. “Home teams historically win a majority of games in the playoffs.”
This season, the Riverhawks established new school records for goals scored, with 78, and goals allowed, at just 3. They currently boast the top-ranked offense among 31 Class 4A teams, averaging six goals per game, while their defense ranks second, allowing only three goals throughout the season.
“The big key to our success this year was the scoring outburst, of course, along with the girls having another year of experience and getting familiar with where each other is on the field,” Tonn noted. He emphasized the importance of solidifying their defensive strategy, recognizing the team’s offensive talent.
The defensive unit is anchored by goalkeepers Kaiya Doty and Bryce Newby, who share duties in net. Junior goalkeeper Olivia Prado is currently recovering from an injury, with hopes of her return for the playoffs.
As the Riverhawks prepare for their upcoming matches, the excitement and determination within the team remain palpable. Their commitment to excellence has not only brought them success but also set high expectations for their playoff journey.
