Shaquille O’Neal Hints at LSU’s Interest in Nick Saban as Coach

Shaquille O’Neal has sparked interest in the college football world by suggesting that Louisiana State University (LSU) is in talks with former head coach Nick Saban. The speculation arises from the vacancy created by the dismissal of Brian Kelly, who concluded his tenure with a record of 34-14 over four seasons. O’Neal, a prominent LSU alumnus and two-time SEC Player of the Year, shared this news during an interview with Us Weekly.

O’Neal stated, “I heard through the grapevine that they were having conversations with Nick Saban. That’d be awesome if we can bring Nick back.” While this claim isn’t substantiated by major sports journalists such as Brett McMurphy or Dan Wetzel, it carries weight due to O’Neal’s deep connections with LSU. The basketball legend not only played for the Tigers from 1989 to 1992 but is also considering an investment in LSU athletics, including a new arena.

Saban, who is well-known for his success at Alabama where he won six national championships from 2007 to 2023, began his coaching career at LSU. He led the Tigers from 2000 to 2004, achieving an impressive overall record of 48-16. His first national championship as a head coach came with LSU in 2003, making a return to Baton Rouge a logical move if he seeks to revive his coaching career.

The need for a head coach who can secure significant victories is paramount for LSU, according to O’Neal. “I know it will definitely be a winner and I know it’ll be somebody that’s in line with our culture,” he remarked. “We realize if you lose more than two games, we don’t get a significant bowl game.” The sentiment reflects LSU’s aspirations to regain its status as a national contender.

Given Saban’s track record and familiarity with the program, he represents a compelling option for LSU’s future. As discussions unfold, the potential for Saban’s return not only captivates fans but also raises questions about the direction of the Tigers’ football program. O’Neal’s comments, while unofficial, underscore the urgency for LSU to make a strategic decision in its coaching search.
