Red Sox Rally Behind Crochet’s Stellar Performance Against Yankees
The Boston Red Sox triumphed over the New York Yankees with a decisive 6-4 victory on September 24, 2023, securing a crucial win in their pursuit of the American League’s wild-card spot. Pitcher Garrett Crochet, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox during the offseason, delivered an impressive performance, matching his season high with 12 strikeouts over six innings. This win was especially vital as the Red Sox aim to reclaim their position in a tightly contested playoff race.
Crochet took the mound with a strong first-inning lead, allowing the Red Sox to establish momentum early in the game. The team scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning after Crochet struck out two batters in a quick top half. “We already talked about it being a must-win game, just trying to do everything I could,” said Crochet, who now holds a record of 16-5 with a 2.63 ERA. His efforts were pivotal in maintaining the early lead established by the Red Sox offense.
The Red Sox signed Crochet to a substantial $170 million, six-year deal during the first week of the season, beginning next year. The 26-year-old left-hander’s performance against the Yankees illustrates why the team is counting on him as they navigate the final stretch of the season. Currently, Boston is sitting 1.5 games behind the Yankees, who occupy the top wild-card position.
Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story emphasized how Crochet set the tone for the game, saying, “It was huge. He set the tone early there in the top of the first. To put up a six-spot, it felt like a million with Crochet going.” The team’s manager, Alex Cora, noted the importance of managing Crochet’s workload post-All-Star break to ensure he remains effective as the season progresses. “For all those questions about workload and (velocity) down, I think the last (pitch) was 99 mph,” Cora explained. “We took care of him to take care of us. Hopefully, the rest of the month and the next one he’s a huge part of it.”
Crochet recognizes the significance of his role as the season approaches its climax. “Especially as we’re nearing the end here, I don’t want to have any regret on my mind here in the next couple of weeks,” he said. “Just trying to do everything I can to put us in a good spot.” When asked about the possibility of facing the Yankees in the postseason, he expressed enthusiasm, stating, “It would be cool because it means we’re in the postseason. I think that’s the main focus. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing.”
As the Red Sox continue their campaign for a playoff spot, Crochet’s performance against a historic rival like the Yankees illustrates both his potential and the team’s determination. With critical games ahead, Boston is poised to make a strong push for the postseason, and Crochet will undoubtedly be a key contributor to that effort.
