Rasmus Hojlund Leaves Manchester United for Napoli After Tough Season
Rasmus Hojlund’s time at Manchester United has come to an unexpected end, with the young striker now on loan to Napoli after a challenging summer. Just over two weeks since his departure, Hojlund is back in Manchester, preparing to face Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League. His swift transition from Old Trafford to Naples came after a meeting with key decision-makers at United, where he was informed he no longer had a future at the club.
Initially, Hojlund had no intention of leaving Manchester. After a promising pre-season tour of the United States, where he scored in a friendly against Bournemouth, he expressed his desire to remain part of the squad. His recent move to a new rented property in Altrincham underscored his commitment to the club. However, after United’s penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, the situation changed dramatically.
Sources familiar with the internal discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that Hojlund was directly told he would not feature in the club’s plans moving forward. Despite earlier advice to explore transfer options, Hojlund held on to the hope of competing with new signing Benjamin Sesko, who joined for €76.5 million (£66.4 million; $90.7 million) from RB Leipzig. Yet, after being left out of the squad for three consecutive matches, the reality of his situation became clear.
Faced with the prospect of limited playing time and no European football, Hojlund accepted the decision to leave. Excited by the chance to join Serie A champions Napoli, he flew to Italy that weekend and completed a season-long loan agreement the following Monday. Should Napoli secure a Champions League spot for the next season, they will make the deal permanent for €44 million.
Hojlund departs United with a strong reputation among teammates and fans alike. Known for his vibrant personality, he endeared himself to the squad with his karaoke performances at the FA Cup final afterparty and his engaging social media presence. As a lifelong supporter of United, his desire to succeed at the club was profound. Nevertheless, the reality of performance metrics weighed heavily against him.
In two seasons, Hojlund found the net 26 times in 95 appearances, which, although respectable, raised eyebrows given his status as a high-profile signing. His tally included 16 goals in his debut season, where he was the top scorer for the team, but consistency proved elusive. Last season, he managed just 10 goals, with a particularly difficult stretch where he went 21 matches without scoring.
Compounding these challenges were injury issues. Hojlund played through a foot problem during the concluding months of the campaign, which affected his performance. Despite the pain, he continued to feature in critical matches, becoming United’s only available striker after injuries to others forced him into a demanding role.
The pressure on Hojlund became evident as he struggled to regain his form. He openly acknowledged the need for shared responsibilities, particularly in a high-stakes environment that often expects immediate results from young talent. Reflecting on his experiences, Hojlund noted the importance of having support in the dressing room, a sentiment echoed by teammate Raphael Varane, who highlighted the differences in how young players are integrated into clubs like Manchester United compared to others.
Hojlund’s departure marks a significant chapter in his career. While his time at Manchester United was fraught with challenges, his journey to Napoli offers a fresh start and the opportunity to rediscover his form in a new environment. The football world will be watching closely as he embarks on this next phase, eager to see if he can fulfil the potential that once made him one of the most talked-about young strikers in Europe.
