Local Football Teams Secure Wins; Astoria Faces Tough Loss
Local high school football teams in Oregon showcased impressive performances on October 28, 2025, with the Warrenton Warriors, Seaside Seagulls, and Clatskanie Tigers all posting significant victories. Meanwhile, the Astoria Fishermen faced a challenging defeat against a strong Scappoose squad.
Warrenton Warriors Rally for Playoff Position
The Warrenton Warriors overcame a slow start to secure a crucial 21-7 victory against the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers. The game, held at John Mattila Field, was significant for Warrenton’s playoff aspirations, as they aimed to clinch a top three finish in the Coastal Range League.
Despite challenging weather conditions, including rain and wind, the Warriors managed to turn the tide in the second half. Senior quarterback Zephan Pierce threw three touchdown passes, two of which connected with sophomore standout Dylan Ballard. Pierce finished the game with 227 yards passing and 66 yards rushing. Ballard contributed 85 yards on the ground, along with 102 yards receiving.
Head coach Travis Freeman praised his team’s resilience, stating, “They’re a resilient bunch… The kids stepped up.” The victory improved Warrenton’s record to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play, positioning them third in the standings. The Warriors will face the number two-ranked Banks in their regular season finale this Friday.
Seaside Seagulls Dominate at Home
The Seaside Seagulls returned to Broadway Field with a bang, defeating the St. Helens Lions 55-7. This decisive win marked a refreshing end to five consecutive away games for Seaside.
Sophomore Trey McCleary stepped up in the absence of senior Ryder Jackson, rushing for an impressive 235 yards and scoring five touchdowns. Quarterback Brayden Cooley showcased his accuracy, completing all four of his passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. The Seagulls improved their overall record to 4-4 and 3-1 in league play. Their upcoming match against Tillamook, currently ranked fifth in 4A, is set to be a highlight as Halloween approaches.
Astoria Fishermen Struggle Against Scappoose
Senior night for the Astoria Fishermen did not unfold as hoped, as they fell to the number three-ranked Scappoose Indians, 33-7. Although Astoria remained competitive in the first half, trailing by just 14 points, they were unable to keep pace with Scappoose’s talent. This loss brings Astoria’s record to 3-5, marking their third consecutive defeat.
Despite the setback, Astoria still holds the number 17 position in the 4A rankings. Their final game against St. Helens will be crucial, as a victory could secure a postseason spot as a fourth-place team in their league.
Clatskanie Tigers Remain Undefeated
In a thrilling Thursday matchup, the Clatskanie Tigers edged out the Knappa Loggers with a narrow 21-14 victory. The win solidified Clatskanie’s perfect record at 8-0, while Knappa dropped to 6-1. Despite the loss, Knappa remains a top contender, ranked third in 2A, and will look to secure a favorable playoff position in their final game against Vernonia.
This week, local teams will continue to battle for playoff positioning, with key matchups that promise to deliver excitement as the season approaches its conclusion.
