Cloudland Highlanders Triumph Over North Greene in Thrilling 58-51 Clash

In a dramatic matchup on October 6, 2023, the Cloudland Highlanders defeated North Greene 58-51 in a high-scoring encounter in Greeneville, securing their place in the Region 1-1A playoff scenario. The Highlanders, initially trailing 14-0, mounted a remarkable comeback characterized by a potent rushing attack and strong performances by key players.
Senior running back Landon Barnette was instrumental in Cloudland’s victory, amassing 160 rushing yards and scoring four touchdowns on just 12 carries. His pivotal 46-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter ignited the Highlanders’ resurgence. Following an onside kick recovery by Cloudland, Barnette scored again from 10 yards out, shifting the momentum to give his team a 30-28 lead.
Strong Performances Fuel Cloudland’s Comeback
Cloudland’s quarterback Bryce Birchfield, who also played a crucial role, contributed significantly with a 53-yard touchdown run just before halftime. This play sent the Highlanders into the locker room with a narrow lead of 36-35. Birchfield finished the game with 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns, along with a 10-yard completion to Austin Simerly.
Adding to the offensive firepower, Grayson Cole rushed for 119 yards on 22 carries, scoring two touchdowns, including a critical 1-yard run in the fourth quarter that helped secure the win for Cloudland.
Despite Cloudland’s offensive surge, North Greene fought back valiantly. Quarterback Thomas Darnell threw for 158 yards and recorded three touchdowns while also rushing for 96 yards and another score. Running back Leon Johnson contributed with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Brayden Weems made six receptions for 122 yards, scoring once on the ground and once through the air.

Cloudland’s victory keeps their playoff hopes alive, as they currently hold a record of 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the region. The Highlanders are set to host Unaka on October 13, 2023, for a Senior Night celebration at Orr Field.
