Buffalo Bills Face Major Challenge: Run Defense Cripples Team

The Buffalo Bills are grappling with a significant issue during their Week 7 bye week, following a surprising 24-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Instead of the anticipated need for more support for quarterback Josh Allen, the team’s most pressing concern lies in its struggling run defense. After beginning the season with a strong 4-0 record, the Bills have now suffered two consecutive prime-time defeats, dropping their record to 4-2 and losing their top position in the AFC East to the New England Patriots.

In their latest game against the Falcons, Allen struggled significantly, especially under pressure from an energized Atlanta pass rush. Despite his efforts, which included moments of brilliance, the Bills’ defense could not keep the Falcons from establishing their run game. The duo of Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier dominated, combining for an impressive 210 rushing yards. This included an eye-popping 81-yard touchdown run from Robinson, marking one of Buffalo’s most troubling defensive moments of the season.

The Bills’ run defense now ranks a dismal 31st in the league, allowing an average of 156.3 rushing yards per game. This sharp decline is notable, given that they ranked 12th in the same category last season. Only the 1-5 Dolphins have a worse run defense, while the Patriots stand fourth in the league, significantly improving from last year’s 23rd position.

Historically, five of the top six teams in run defense would qualify for the playoffs if the season ended today. In contrast, the Bills and the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, are the only two playoff teams currently among the bottom six. The Eagles have faced similar scrutiny as their run defense faltered in recent losses, despite having strong passing options such as A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

The Bills’ defensive struggles are compounded by injuries. They were without key linebacker Matt Milano for the game against the Falcons. Although defensive tackle Ed Oliver returned from an ankle injury, his presence alone has not sufficed to halt the opposition’s ground game. The team must address these defensive shortcomings, especially with a challenging second half of the season ahead, which includes matchups against formidable opponents like Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Pittsburgh.

Coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich face a daunting task in remedying these issues. The Bills must quickly find solutions in their defensive scheme or personnel to mitigate the impact of their run defense. As the season progresses, the ability of Allen to lead the team to a deeper playoff run may hinge less on his performance and more on the effectiveness of the Bills’ defense in stopping the run.

As the team prepares for the second half of the season, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how the Bills address this critical weakness. The upcoming games will be pivotal in determining whether they can reclaim their status as a Super Bowl contender.
