49ers Rookie Connor Colby Set to Start Following Bartch Injury
The San Francisco 49ers are facing a challenging situation as presumed starting left guard Ben Bartch has sustained an elbow injury. Bartch missed a recent joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders and will also be unavailable for the upcoming preseason game against the same team. His injury history raises concerns about his durability, leading to the likelihood that rookie offensive lineman Connor Colby will step into a starting role during the 2025 season.
Bartch’s ongoing injury issues have created a significant gap on the offensive line. While he may not require extensive practice repetitions for development, his track record suggests that it may not be long before he faces another injury that sidelines him for an extended period. This reality has compelled the 49ers to consider Colby as a viable starter sooner than anticipated.
Colby’s Rising Profile
The 49ers did not draft Colby with immediate starting expectations, but the current circumstances have shifted that perspective. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has acknowledged Colby’s progress, stating, “I think he’s getting better each week.” Shanahan emphasized the need for patience with rookie offensive linemen, noting that they typically take time to adapt to the demands of professional play. He added, “The cool thing about o-linemen is they just gradually get better each day, learning what we’re asking.”
Colby has received positive recognition following his performances, particularly in the preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Shanahan confirmed that Colby performed well, making him a player to monitor in the upcoming matchup against the Raiders. His continued improvement has garnered attention, with strong metrics reported by Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Support from teammates further highlights Colby’s potential. Quarterback Brock Purdy praised the rookie, stating, “He balled out” in the previous preseason game and has shown significant growth as he works his way up the depth chart. Purdy acknowledged the challenges rookie linemen face but emphasized Colby’s ability to handle them with poise.
Focus on Development
The 49ers are already contending with a liability on the offensive line behind veteran tackle Trent Williams. The team cannot afford another setback behind Bartch, making Colby’s development critical. Shanahan has pointed out that refining Colby’s run-blocking skills will be essential for him to secure and maintain a starting position once the opportunity arises.
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Colby to see if he can rise to the occasion. The 49ers are hoping that his progress will continue, providing a much-needed boost to their offensive line. With Bartch’s injury casting uncertainty, Colby’s readiness could prove vital for the team’s success in the upcoming season.
