Toni Atkins Gains Momentum with Key Endorsements in Governor Race
In a competitive race for the California governorship, Democratic candidate and former San Diego State Senator Toni Atkins has secured several significant endorsements from prominent state Democratic leaders. These endorsements come as Atkins continues to trail in the polls, currently registering at just 1% as voters’ first choice, according to a recent poll conducted by the Berkley Institute of Governmental Studies. Despite this, experts indicate that the field remains wide open, with no clear frontrunner emerging.
The California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus publicly endorsed Atkins, highlighting her long-standing commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. Atkins made history as the first openly lesbian legislator to serve as speaker of the assembly and as the first LGBTQ+ woman to hold the position of senate pro tempore. In a statement, Chris Ward, Chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus and Assemblymember, praised Atkins, stating, “She’s opened doors for so many while advancing justice and equity for all.”
Atkins’s campaign also received support from State Senators Tom Umberg and Bob Archuleta, along with Assemblymembers Jacqui Irwin, Tina McKinnor, and Gail Pellerin. Both Umberg and Archuleta, who are veterans, emphasized her dedication to veterans and those in service roles. Archuleta commented, “As a U.S. Army veteran, I know firsthand the importance of strong, principled leadership, and Toni exemplifies that.”
While Atkins is building momentum, Democratic Representative Katie Porter currently leads the race, polling at approximately 17%. Following her is Republican candidate and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who holds around 10% of voter support.
Porter has also garnered endorsements, most recently from the Teamsters California, a union representing 250,000 workers across the state. In their announcement, Teamsters Co-Chairs Chris Griswold and Peter Finn expressed their confidence in Porter, saying, “Teamsters across our state are ready for a governor who stands with working people.” They highlighted her commitment to addressing the affordability crisis and protecting jobs.
Assemblymember Pellerin endorsed Atkins, citing her strong record of advocating for “working families” and a vision for a “brighter future.” Pellerin stated, “Toni puts people first. I am honored to endorse her run for Governor because I know she will fight for everyone, no matter their background.”
McKinnor, another supporter, praised Atkins for her ability to navigate the political landscape amid tensions in California and Washington. She noted, “She’s the kind of leader who stands firm in the face of pressure and political posturing. At a time when Donald Trump and Washington Republicans are undermining our democracy, threatening immigrant communities, and ignoring the rule of law, California needs someone with the courage and experience to push back.”
The California primary elections are scheduled for June 2, 2026, with the general election following on November 8, 2026. As the race unfolds, candidates continue to solidify their positions and rally support, indicating a dynamic political landscape ahead.
