Oklahoma Teachers Rally Amid Education Crisis, Call for Action

An open letter from Jessica Jernegan-Villarreal, an educator in Oklahoma, has highlighted the urgent challenges facing the state’s public education system. Despite Oklahoma’s ranking as the lowest in the nation for public education, Jernegan-Villarreal asserts that the hard work and dedication of teachers and staff do not reflect this statistic. Instead, she emphasizes that these educators are the backbone of the system, making a significant impact on students’ lives every day.
The letter underscores a troubling reality: over the past decade, Oklahoma has cut per-pupil funding by nearly 28%, the steepest reduction in the United States. As a result, educational institutions have struggled to maintain programs, instructional days, and staff. Even seven years after the significant teacher walkout in 2018, total education funding remains significantly below pre-recession levels.
Funding Cuts and Their Impact
Jernegan-Villarreal points to the decisions made by elected officials that have led to this crisis. Public funding continues to be diverted towards private school tax credits and voucher programs. Oklahoma ranks among the highest states in the U.S. for the percentage of public education funds redirected to private entities, often with limited oversight. This trend raises concerns about the future of public education, which serves approximately 90% of the state’s students.
The situation is further exacerbated by a growing teacher shortage. In 2022, Oklahoma issued nearly 4,000 emergency certifications, indicating a systemic crisis. Low salaries, negative narratives surrounding the profession, and political pressures have caused many talented educators to leave. Despite these challenges, teachers continue to show resilience, striving to support and lead their students.
Jernegan-Villarreal criticizes the Oklahoma Legislature for its failure to hold the state superintendent accountable, emphasizing that their role is not only to fund schools but also to ensure that the constitutional promise of public education is upheld.
Call to Action for Educators and the Community
In her letter, Jernegan-Villarreal urges educators, counselors, bus drivers, and parents to share their stories and advocate for real support from lawmakers. She encourages them to invite legislators into classrooms and communicate the specific needs of students.
“Be specific. Be bold,” she writes. When lawmakers fail to respond, she emphasizes the importance of voting, reminding readers that every election influences the future of public education. “You vote because investing in public education isn’t optional. It’s a constitutional obligation,” she asserts.
As the education crisis in Oklahoma continues to unfold, the call for collective action grows louder. Jernegan-Villarreal’s letter resonates deeply within the community, reinforcing the belief that the dedication and work of educators should not be overshadowed by political decisions. The future of public education in Oklahoma depends on the commitment of both educators and the community to advocate for change.
Thanking educators for their tireless efforts, Jernegan-Villarreal closes on a hopeful note, recognizing their vital role in shaping the next generation. The message is clear: the fight for quality public education in Oklahoma is far from over, and the community must unite to ensure that every child receives the support and education they deserve.
