A tragic accident occurred in North Dakota on Saturday, July 26, 2023, when a vehicle driven by Rita Kubat, a 67-year-old resident of Jamestown, crashed into Stink Lake. The incident took place around 08:15 when the North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to reports of a submerged vehicle at the intersection of Old U.S. Highway 281 and U.S. Highway 2.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered tire marks leading off the road, indicating that Kubat’s Toyota Camry had veered into a ditch. The vehicle subsequently rolled over large rocks before landing on its roof in the lake. Tragically, Kubat was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed that multiple agencies assisted in the emergency response. The U.S. Border Patrol, North Dakota Game and Fish Department, Lake Region Search and Rescue, Leeds Ambulance Service, and Leeds Fire Department all played crucial roles in the recovery efforts.

This incident underscores the importance of seat belt usage while driving. The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, seeking to understand how the vehicle left the roadway.

As the community mourns the loss of Rita Kubat, this tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on the road and the need for heightened safety awareness.
