IRS Urged to Investigate Nonprofits Linked to Political Violence

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) faces calls to investigate nonprofit organizations that are allegedly enabling political violence in the United States. Critics argue that the agency has been slow to address these issues, indicating a need for significant reform within its operations.
Calls for IRS Action Against Nonprofits
Recent incidents of violence connected to organized protests have raised concerns about nonprofits’ roles in these events. For instance, in Chicago, rioters reportedly attacked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin noting that officers were “rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.” The situation escalated to the point where officers had to fire defensive shots in response to a rioter armed with a semi-automatic weapon.
Similar protests have occurred in other cities. In Portland, demonstrators targeted the local ICE office, while in Los Angeles, rioters threw objects off bridges at police officers. Such organized activities have prompted calls for the IRS to reassess the tax-exempt status of groups that allegedly incite violence under the guise of political activism.
One organization, the No Kings group, plans a rally on October 18 that includes “de-escalation training.” Critics argue that this training is a euphemism for teaching participants how to engage in unlawful behavior while obstructing law enforcement operations. Among the sponsors of this event is the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), raising eyebrows about their involvement in activities that could jeopardize federal officers’ safety during a government shutdown.
IRS’s Internal Challenges and Historical Context
The IRS has been criticized not only for its inaction regarding political violence but also for its internal challenges. Reports indicate that confidential tax information of notable figures, including former President Donald Trump, was stolen by an IRS contractor, Charles Littlejohn, and leaked to media outlets. This breach is seen as part of a broader issue where taxpayers, particularly conservative donors, feel targeted by the agency, leading to fears of political retribution.
This pattern of alleged political targeting echoes the infamous Tea Party scandal in 2013, where the IRS was accused of unfairly denying tax-exempt status to conservative groups. At the time, Lois Lerner, then head of the Tax Exempt Division, became a focal point for criticisms of the agency’s practices. Her legacy reportedly continues with the current leadership, particularly under Holly Paz, who has faced accusations of misleading Congress during the scandal.
As the IRS grapples with its internal structure and public perception, the ongoing government shutdown has temporarily furloughed over 34,000 workers. This situation presents an opportunity for the agency to refocus its priorities and address the criticisms it faces.
Advocates for reform, like Chuck Flint, President and CEO of the Alliance for IRS Accountability, emphasize that the IRS should take decisive action against nonprofits involved in political violence. It is argued that stripping tax-exempt status from such organizations is a necessary step to uphold the integrity of the agency and its mission.
As discussions about the IRS’s future continue, the agency’s ability to manage its resources and respond to pressing issues will be closely scrutinized. The effectiveness of its actions in the coming months may significantly influence public perception and the political landscape.
