Hochul Vows to Protect NYC Funding Amid Trump Threats

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed her determination to safeguard federal funding for New York City against threats from former President Donald Trump. Speaking at a news conference in Queens on October 14, 2025, Hochul stated she would “fight like hell” to prevent Trump from following through on his intentions to freeze essential federal funds if Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is elected.
Hochul highlighted the significance of New York City, calling it “the economic engine for the entire state.” She emphasized the broader implications of jeopardizing the city, stating, “Just as no one should ever root against our country, you should not root against New York City.” Her remarks came during an event where she appeared alongside Mamdani for the first time, marking a collaborative moment in their campaign efforts.
Trump’s Aggressive Stance
Trump has made clear his intention to take a more aggressive approach toward New York City if Mamdani wins the mayoral election on November 4. He has threatened not only to withhold vital federal funding but also to consider a federal takeover of the city’s governance. Trump criticized Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani, labeling it a “rather shocking development, and a very bad one for New York City.”
Hochul acknowledged her past working relationship with Trump, stating, “I’ll certainly be having those conversations,” referring to the need to remind him of the potential consequences of harming the city. She added that such actions could adversely affect his business interests and properties in the area.
Future Discussions on Child Care Funding
During the news conference, Hochul also addressed discussions with Mamdani about implementing universal free child care in New York City. While the idea has gained traction, details regarding funding remain unclear. Mamdani has proposed that the primary funding source could come from millionaires and corporations. In light of the upcoming election year, Hochul indicated that these conversations would continue post-election to develop concrete policies.
As the political landscape evolves in New York, the stakes surrounding federal funding and local governance are becoming increasingly pronounced. With the mayoral election approaching, both Hochul and Mamdani appear committed to advocating for the city’s interests, despite the looming threats from Trump.
