Birmingham Mayor Urges Congress to Protect 23,000 Families’ SNAP Benefits
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has issued a stark warning regarding the potential loss of food assistance for local families due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. He stated that nearly 23,000 households in Birmingham rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and if Congress does not act, these families could be left without vital support starting on November 1, 2025.
During a press conference held at Birmingham City Hall on October 28, 2025, Woodfin emphasized the human impact of the shutdown, saying, “On November 1, those families could wake up with nothing because Washington shut the government down.” He highlighted that one in four residents depends on SNAP to ensure their basic nutritional needs are met.
The mayor criticized both Democrats and Republicans for their failure to resolve the impasse, stating, “Let’s be clear: hunger isn’t a political game. It’s a moral failure in the wealthiest country on the planet.” He urged Congress to prioritize the needs of families over political disagreements, stressing that the situation should not be used as leverage in negotiations on tax breaks.
Woodfin’s plea reflects a growing concern among local officials about the repercussions of the federal shutdown on community welfare. In his statement, he remarked, “We need Congress to reopen the government now – and protect everyday families. I want our residents to know that your benefits are being held hostage over tax breaks for the few. End the shutdown. Put people first.”
In conclusion, the potential suspension of SNAP benefits poses a significant threat to Birmingham’s most vulnerable populations. As discussions in Washington continue, the mayor remains vocal about the necessity for immediate action to safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of families in his city. He concluded, “We deserve a government that shows up for us, not one that walks away. It’s time to get back to work for the people.”
