The city of San Jose, California, celebrated Mexican Independence Day on September 16, 2023, with a vibrant gathering at City Hall, marked by a sense of pride and unity among attendees. Residents from across the Bay Area participated in the festivities, showcasing their cultural heritage through music, food, and art.

Robert Valdez, who traveled from Santa Cruz to attend the event, expressed the importance of celebrating such a rich culture. “It’s a rich culture, the food, the music, the art,” he stated, highlighting the event’s significance for the community.

Security Measures Heightened Amid National Concerns

This year’s celebration in San Jose featured increased security in response to growing concerns regarding immigration enforcement, which has led to the scaling back or cancellation of similar events in other California cities, including Sacramento. Jesus Flores, president of the organization hosting the San Jose event, noted that they doubled security measures to ensure the safety of participants. “We have armed police officers, we also have private security, and again this is all to protect our community to be safe,” Flores said. His commitment to creating a secure environment reflects a broader effort to foster community belonging.

Despite these changes, many attendees, such as Apolonia Cortez, felt grateful for the opportunity to celebrate. Cortez emphasized the importance of representation, stating, “I feel very proud to be able to celebrate for those who can’t and to show representation that we’re not going away – we’re all here and there’s a lot of us.”

Community Spirit Shines Through

While the crowd was noticeably smaller compared to previous years, the spirit of the celebration remained intact. Jeanette Nava attended the event with her daughter to share the experience of their culture. “Being with family, I think that’s the most important thing,” Nava remarked, reinforcing the event’s role as a gathering place for families and friends.

The continued celebration of Mexican Independence Day in San Jose not only serves to honor national heritage but also acts as a platform for community solidarity. As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of pride, reflecting the resilience and unity of the community, even in the face of challenges.
