Ninja Swirl Ice Cream Maker: A Delicious Upgrade to Home Treats
The highly anticipated Ninja Creami Swirl ice cream maker has officially hit the market, generating excitement among dessert enthusiasts since its teaser in January. After testing the device, I discovered its potential for transforming store-bought protein shakes into delightful, high-protein, low-fat treats.
With features such as 13 one-touch programs and a soft-serve handle capable of dispensing up to four small cones from a single container, the Ninja Creami Swirl is designed for convenience and creativity in the kitchen.
Design and Size Considerations
The Swirl presents a substantial presence on the kitchen counter, measuring 15 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 17 inches tall. This bulk means it may not easily fit beneath standard kitchen cabinets, and at 20 pounds, it requires a bit of effort to lift. Each unit comes with two pint containers exclusive to the Swirl, featuring a locking base that twists to function as a soft-serve dispenser once inserted into the machine.
One of the more challenging aspects of using the Swirl is the requirement for a 24-hour freeze time for your ice cream mixture. I filled the pint container with two vanilla protein shakes, reaching the Max Fill line, and returned the next day to continue the process.
Performance and Taste Experience
Utilizing the ‘Lite Soft Serve’ setting, I was pleased to find the texture of my low-fat mixture remarkably smooth. Unlike previous models, which often required multiple spins to achieve the desired consistency, the Swirl delivered a satisfying result on the first attempt.
Although the device has a reputation for being loud, I found it even noisier than its predecessors. Measuring at 84dB, the operation lasted over four minutes, which is longer than my typical experience with the Creami Deluxe. This extended time likely stems from the need to create a softer texture suitable for soft-serve.
Dispensing the ice cream requires pulling down a lever on the side of the machine. While the process aims for a perfectly swirled presentation, I found it challenging to execute flawlessly, resulting in a somewhat erratic swirl. Fortunately, the included drip tray helps manage any spills.
Flavor-wise, the soft-serve exceeded my expectations. It was exceptionally smooth and creamy, making it difficult to believe I was enjoying a frozen protein shake instead of traditional ice cream. However, the treat melted quickly, prompting me to finish it promptly.
My comprehensive review is still forthcoming, but for individuals seeking a healthier dessert option while meeting daily protein goals, the Ninja Creami Swirl could represent a significant addition to their kitchen repertoire.
