Local Man Revives Historic Sign at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

In a heartfelt effort to preserve a significant piece of local history, Francis James Talbot, known as Jim, has restored the iconic sign at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in St. Joseph, Missouri. Originally constructed by Talbot, his father, and their friend Joe McNary sixty years ago, the sign represents a cherished family legacy and deep community ties.
Growing up in St. Joseph, Talbot has been connected to St. Patrick’s Cathedral since childhood. He recalls spending time with his father on various construction projects, an experience that fostered a strong bond between them. “Dad would bring me to project sites after school, and those moments shaped my love for building and community,” he reflected.
Recently, Talbot noticed that the sign had begun to deteriorate. Concerned about its condition, he approached Father Davis of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, seeking permission to restore the sign alongside his friends, Dale Frankum and Brett Profits. Father Davis welcomed the initiative, allowing the group to commence work on the project.
The restoration process was filled with emotion for Talbot. “It means quite a bit,” he shared. “I kind of get a little emotional when I think about it.” Through the collaborative effort, not only has Talbot revived a physical structure, but he has also rekindled the memories of the time spent with his father and friends.
The completed restoration stands as a testament to family heritage and community spirit, reflecting a commitment to preserving history for future generations. Talbot’s dedication to this project exemplifies the importance of local landmarks and the personal connections that define them.
With the sign now restored, the legacy of Talbot’s father and the friendships forged over the years continue to shine brightly in the heart of St. Joseph.
