MITCHELL — Landon Ruesink, a senior at Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU), has been awarded the prestigious A.O. Duer Scholarship Award for his outstanding achievements in scholarship, character, and citizenship. The announcement was made on September 17, 2023, marking Ruesink as one of the two recipients recognized by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) this year.

Ruesink, who maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in accounting, has been described by mentors and coaches using terms such as “generational” and “tremendous leader.” This accolade reflects not only his academic excellence but also his commitment to community service and personal integrity. DWU has seen three A.O. Duer honorees in the past five years, underscoring the institution’s emphasis on nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Community Engagement and Leadership

Six individuals, including Ruesink’s former football coach, Ross Cimpl, submitted letters of recommendation highlighting his dedication to service and leadership. Cimpl noted, “Landon is always involved with our community service projects. It is amazing how mature he is for his age. His ability to put other people’s needs before his is something I am extremely proud to be a part of as his coach the past two seasons.”

Ruesink’s commitment goes beyond academics and athletics. He actively participates in community service initiatives, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility and leadership. His involvement has made a significant impact on both the university and the wider community, showcasing the values instilled in him during his time at DWU.

Balancing Act: Academic and Athletic Life

In a recent interview featured in the Mitchell Republic Midweek Update, Ruesink discussed the challenges of balancing a busy academic schedule with his commitments as an athlete. He emphasized the importance of time management and staying engaged in both pursuits. “Staying focused on my goals helps me maintain balance,” he said, reflecting on what drives him to excel.

Ruesink’s journey serves as an inspiration to his peers, exemplifying how dedication and hard work can lead to success both in the classroom and on the field. As he looks ahead, Ruesink aims to leverage his education and experiences to make a meaningful contribution to society.

The A.O. Duer Scholarship Award not only recognizes individual achievement but also highlights the importance of character and community involvement in the realm of collegiate athletics. Ruesink’s recognition is a testament to the values upheld by Dakota Wesleyan University and the NAIA.
