Cal Raleigh Matches Mantle’s Historic Mark with 43rd Homer
Cal Raleigh made history on Sunday by hitting his 43rd home run of the season, tying the legendary Mickey Mantle’s record for the most home runs in a season by a switch-hitter. The Seattle Mariners’ catcher achieved this milestone with a powerful first-inning drive against the Los Angeles Angels, launching a first-pitch homer into left-center off pitcher Kyle Hendricks. This early score gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead in what was a pivotal game.
Raleigh’s achievement is particularly significant as it surpasses the previous record for home runs hit by a catcher in a single season, which was held by Atlanta’s Javy López, who hit 42 home runs in 2003. With this latest homer, Raleigh not only asserts his place in baseball history but also highlights his remarkable growth over five seasons in Major League Baseball. Last year, he set a personal best with 34 home runs, demonstrating a substantial improvement in his offensive capabilities.
Chasing the Mariners’ Record
As the season progresses, Raleigh is now just two home runs shy of tying the Seattle Mariners’ single-season record of 45 home runs, a mark set by the iconic Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997 and matched again in 1998. The 26-year-old has become a crucial asset for the Mariners, further establishing his reputation as one of the most formidable hitters in the league.
The significance of Raleigh’s accomplishments is amplified by the context of his performance. Batting left-handed, he has consistently shown the ability to capitalize on pitching, which has led to his record-setting season. The Mariners’ fans are now eagerly watching as he aims to not only break the franchise record but also to continue climbing the ranks of baseball’s greats.
Raleigh’s journey reflects a dedication to the sport and an evolution that many aspiring players look up to. His achievement is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the thrill of competing at the highest level. As the Mariners continue their season, all eyes will be on Raleigh as he seeks to set new records and inspire the next generation of baseball players.
