Virginia Beach Mourns the Loss of Actor and Teacher Jim Ogilvie
Jim Paul Ogilvie, a resident of Virginia Beach and a beloved figure in the performing arts community, passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 2025, at his temporary home in Norfolk, Virginia. At the age of 65, he succumbed to sudden complications related to cancer, which he had been battling intermittently for several years. Just before his passing, he was preparing to begin new treatments that offered hope for his condition.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1959 in Washington, D.C., Jim was raised in Arlington, Virginia, by his mother and grandparents. His love for acting and stunt work propelled him to various cities throughout his life, including New York City, Los Angeles, Hawaii, New Orleans, Birmingham, and Richmond. Ultimately, he settled in Virginia Beach, where he became an integral part of the local arts community.
Jim’s career spanned multiple facets of the entertainment industry. He worked in television, commercials, print, and live theater, and even had a featured role as an extra in the iconic film Silence of the Lambs. Yet, it was his passion for Tai Chi and Qigong that brought him the greatest fulfillment. As both a student and teacher, he dedicated himself to sharing these practices with others, emphasizing balance and well-being.
A Life of Passion and Community
Outside of his professional pursuits, Jim embraced an active lifestyle. He enjoyed biking, martial arts, and spending time at the beach, often drawing inspiration from his love of sports. A devoted fan of the Washington Commanders and the Washington Nationals, he shared these passions with his father.
Jim’s personal life was marked by deep connections, particularly with his loving companion Darlene Converse, who passed away in 2024. Their years together were filled with shared adventures and a mutual appreciation for the outdoors. Jim also held dear the memories of his family, including his siblings and twelve nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Whitney [Granger] Ogilvie, his mother, Francine L. Koenig, his sister Crystal Ogilvie, and his grandparents, Francine F. Koenig and Paul Koenig, Jr..
A memorial gathering to celebrate Jim’s life will take place on August 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Eureka Park, located at 2600 Southern Boulevard, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452. All are welcome to attend and share in the remembrance of a cherished friend, mentor, and artist.
