This rapid dependency reflects the potent effects of kratom, particularly due to high levels of its active compound, 7-hydroxymitragynine, found in some liquid extracts.

Kratom is readily available in various forms across Utah, including powders, capsules, pills, and liquid “shots.” Despite its accessibility, there are growing calls for increased regulation. Many locations do not require identification checks, raising concerns about youth access to the substance.

Hawkins’s experience is not isolated. The substance has been dubbed “gas station heroin” by many due to its addictive potential and the ease with which it can be obtained. Lawmakers are now reconsidering their stance on kratom, pushing for bans on a product they once approved.
