Community Mourns Loss of Doug Ferguson, 81, Devoted Family Man

Douglas “Doug” Ferguson, aged 81, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, at his home in Stewartville, Minnesota, surrounded by family after a brave struggle with cancer. His passing marks the end of a life dedicated to family and community, leaving a lasting legacy.

Born on May 25, 1944, in Dodge Center, Minnesota, Doug was the youngest of six children of George and Mildred (Fischer) Ferguson. He grew up in the rural regions of Dodge Center, Wasioja, and the Kasson-Mantorville area. It was here that he met Jeanne Houseman, who became his partner for 59 years. Doug graduated from Dodge Center High School in 1962 before joining the US Army National Guard, where he served while attending Mankato State University. He pursued studies in computer programming, laying the groundwork for a successful career.

Doug spent 35 years at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, where he worked as both a programmer and manager. After his retirement, he continued to contribute to the field as a contractor for several years. His professional achievements were matched by his commitment to his family. Jeanne, a dedicated homemaker, also worked as a secretary at the Stewartville United Methodist Church for 14 years and spent time employed at IBM.

Family life was central to Doug’s identity. He was devoted to providing for his loved ones and instilling strong family values. Doug took great joy in creating lasting traditions, whether through camping trips, fishing expeditions, or hosting large holiday gatherings at their home on 5th Avenue Southeast. After 54 years in that residence, Doug and Jeanne moved to a townhome in Stewartville.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne; two sons, Joel (Kim) Ferguson of Mantorville and Aaron (Missy) Ferguson of Lake City; and a daughter, LeaAnn (Jack) Underwood of Racine. He also leaves behind his sister, Robin Orth of Austin, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on August 4, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville, with Rev. Tim Bowman officiating. Following the service, a burial and committal will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kasson, Minnesota, after a lunch for attendees. Arrangements are being handled by Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
