Morris Chestnut Discusses Sherlock Holmes’ Return in ‘Watson’ Season 2

The CBS series Watson is set to return for its second season on January 26, 2025, with significant developments, including the much-anticipated return of Sherlock Holmes, played by Robert Carlyle. Morris Chestnut, who portrays Dr. John Watson, shared insights into how this twist will impact the show’s dynamics, particularly as the characters navigate personal and professional challenges.
In the upcoming season, Watson faces new medical mysteries, including a personal case involving Mary’s mother, who is struggling with a rare form of dementia. The absence of key team member Ingrid adds another layer of complexity as Watson and the remaining team members—Adam and Stephens—work through their grief and challenges. Chestnut noted that the dynamic changes significantly with the return of Holmes, who had been presumed dead in the first season.
Chestnut expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Sherlock Holmes into the fold, emphasizing the profound friendship between Watson and Holmes. He explained, “I love that we get Sherlock… they’re longtime friends. We’ve had great, tremendous times, but we also had serious situations that we had to deal with.” The actor highlighted the mentorship aspect of their relationship, stating that while Watson guides a young team of professionals, he also stands to learn from Holmes.
The introduction of Holmes raises questions about his whereabouts during his absence, which Chestnut found intriguing. He mentioned that the creative team, led by showrunner Craig Sweeny, has developed a compelling storyline that builds on the established friendship. “I read the script and was amazed at how they brought him back. It’s going to be great,” he said.
As the season progresses, viewers can expect to see the evolution of Watson’s relationships, particularly with Shinwell, a character who has faced significant challenges. Chestnut described the reconciliation process between Watson and Shinwell, emphasizing Watson’s capacity for forgiveness and his commitment to helping others. “He wants to help people… If he sees good in someone, he’s willing to let things go,” he explained.
Ingrid’s absence in the team is palpable, and Chestnut acknowledged the difficulties of missing a key member. “When one aspect of that team is missing, it’s not working as it should,” he said. The actor noted that they will explore how the team copes with this loss and attempts to reassemble.
The cases in Watson are often deeply personal, and the first case of the new season is no exception. It involves Mary’s mother, allowing for deeper character exploration and emotional connection. Chestnut stated, “Every case is personal to Watson… he wanted to do what was best for Mary and her family.” This case not only serves as an engaging plot but also as a means for character development and emotional resonance.
As for Watson’s relationship with Laila, a pediatric oncologist, Chestnut noted that the character is still grappling with unresolved issues from his past, particularly related to his ex-wife Mary. He described their dynamic as mature, highlighting Laila’s understanding nature, especially during moments of emotional turmoil. “You’ll see throughout the season how he navigates those relationships,” he added.
Looking ahead, Chestnut expressed excitement about the mix of lighthearted moments and dramatic medical mysteries in Season 2. He believes viewers will appreciate the deeper exploration of character backstories and the evolving dynamics within the team. “With Season 2, you’ll see more levity in the show… and some interesting medical mysteries,” he concluded.
The return of Watson promises to deliver compelling storytelling and character development, with the addition of Sherlock Holmes providing fresh energy to the series. Fans can look forward to a season rich in emotional depth and engaging medical cases, enhancing the show’s appeal.
