Michael J. Bobbitt Appointed as President & CEO of OPERA America
Michael J. Bobbitt has been appointed the new President and CEO of OPERA America, set to begin his tenure on January 1, 2026. The announcement was made by Lee Anne Myslewski, Chair of the Board, on behalf of the organization’s Board of Directors. Bobbitt will lead OPERA America under a five-year contract, succeeding Marc A. Scorca, who has served for 35 years.
Bobbitt brings a diverse background to his new role, having previously served as the Executive Director of the Mass Cultural Council in Boston since 2021. His artistic experience spans various disciplines, including his training as a trumpeter and classical vocalist. Additionally, he has established himself as an award-winning playwright, director, and choreographer, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of the arts.
In a statement regarding his appointment, Bobbitt expressed enthusiasm about joining OPERA America. “I am thrilled to join OPERA America and build on Marc Scorca’s extraordinary legacy. I look forward to supporting the opera field so this art form, and all its players, can thrive nationally and internationally,” he said.
Transitioning Leadership and Future Plans
As Bobbitt prepares to take the reins, Scorca will conclude his lengthy tenure at the end of 2025 and has been designated as President Emeritus of OPERA America. In this advisory role, Scorca will ensure a smooth transition and continues to contribute to the organization by editing lectures, webinars, and workshops into accessible resources. He will also provide valuable annotations to OPERA America’s Oral History Project.
Scorca conveyed his best wishes to Bobbitt, stating, “I extend warm congratulations and every good wish for success to Michael as he leads OPERA America and the field into the future.” He added, “It’s a tremendous honor to be named President Emeritus, and I look forward to supporting the transition.”
Looking Ahead for OPERA America
Bobbitt’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for OPERA America, which plays a crucial role in advocating for the opera industry across the United States. His extensive artistic background and leadership experience are expected to enhance the organization’s mission and initiatives.
As the opera community anticipates this leadership change, stakeholders are optimistic about the future direction under Bobbitt’s guidance. His vision aims to foster a thriving environment for opera artists and audiences alike, ensuring that this vibrant art form continues to flourish in the years to come.
