Klaus Mäkelä Launches Tenure with Dynamic Berlioz Performance

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) showcased a compelling performance of Hector Berlioz’s renowned works, “Symphonie fantastique” and “Harold in Italy,” on the evening of October 5, 2023. This concert marked the first of three events featuring the CSO under the direction of its music director designate, Klaus Mäkelä. His energetic and vibrant approach offered a glimpse into what the orchestra’s future may hold as they prepare for Mäkelä’s full tenure beginning in September 2027.

The evening began with no brief overtures; instead, the CSO presented a substantial program highlighting the orchestra’s capabilities. Mäkelä, at just 29 years old, has already garnered enthusiastic support from the musicians, many of whom played pivotal roles in his hiring. This commitment was evident in their performance, which exuded a youthful verve and exuberance, capturing the essence of Mäkelä’s artistic vision.

Berlioz’s Dual Masterpieces

In a noteworthy programming choice, Mäkelä paired “Symphonie fantastique,” Op. 14, with “Harold in Italy,” Op. 16, two complementary works from Berlioz. This arrangement allowed the audience to experience both pieces as interconnected chapters, showcasing Berlioz’s innovative storytelling and romanticism. The solo viola was superbly performed by Antoine Tamestit, who previously made his CSO debut in September 2024. Tamestit’s skillful playing radiated throughout the hall, particularly in the first movement of “Harold in Italy,” which is dedicated to the reflective protagonist of Lord Byron’s poem, “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.” His vibrant sound, combined with a surprising entrance from the back of the orchestra, brought to life the wandering spirit of the title character.

Following a long ovation, Tamestit returned for an encore, performing a captivating rendition of the Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007, in a viola transcription. This performance further established his rapport with the audience and showcased his exceptional talent.

A Memorable Interpretation

Mäkelä’s interpretation of “Symphonie fantastique” was marked by a lively, engaging style. Conducting from memory allowed him to connect more intimately with the musicians, enhancing the overall ensemble dynamic. Notable soloists included English hornist Scott Hostetler and guest flutist Herman van Kogelenberg of the Munich Philharmonic, who captivated the audience with their expressive interpretations.
