Josh Hutcherson Hints at Possible Return in New Hunger Games Prequel
The highly anticipated prequel to *The Hunger Games*, titled *Sunrise on the Reaping*, is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. In light of this upcoming release, actor Josh Hutcherson, who famously portrayed Peeta Mellark in the original series, has expressed interest in reprising his role. Hutcherson recently spoke with Brit + Co, stating, “That’d be cool. No, I know nothing in that world right now.” He emphasized his long-standing admiration for the franchise, saying, “*Hunger Games* is amazing, and I’ve loved it for many years and I will love it forever.”
The narrative of *Sunrise on the Reaping* is set 24 years prior to the events of the original *Hunger Games*. In this new story, a grown Peeta, along with Katniss Everdeen—originally played by Jennifer Lawrence—is depicted during a moment when Haymitch Abernathy, the mentor played by Joseph Zada, recounts his own Hunger Games experience. This prequel continues the saga initiated by Suzanne Collins, who released the fifth book in the franchise earlier this year.
Star-Studded Cast and Continuation of the Franchise
*Sunrise on the Reaping* features an impressive cast, adding to the excitement surrounding the film. Joining Hutcherson are Whitney Peak as Haymitch’s love interest Lenore Dove Baird, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, and Ralph Fiennes portraying President Snow. Other notable cast members include Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman. This diverse ensemble promises to bring depth to the rich storyline that Collins has crafted.
Hutcherson’s involvement in the franchise dates back to the first film released in 2012, followed by roles in *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire* in 2013, and the two-part finale, *Mockingjay*, in 2014 and 2015. Reflecting on his character, Hutcherson has previously expressed a desire to explore Peeta’s life beyond the original series. He stated, “I think Peeta’s an incredible person to get to bring to life. I’m curious to know what happens between when they have their family and when the story ends, just to understand what happened in the world, how they got to that place.”
He further added, “If you can talk to Suzanne Collins and tell her to write a book, I’m in. Sign me up.” The enthusiasm Hutcherson demonstrates highlights the continued relevance and impact of the *Hunger Games* universe, even years after its initial success.
As the film progresses toward its release, fans eagerly await news on casting developments and plot details. The combination of nostalgia for the original characters and the introduction of new ones promises to captivate audiences once more. With the established popularity of the series, *Sunrise on the Reaping* is poised to make a significant mark upon its release, continuing the legacy of a franchise that has resonated with millions around the globe.
