Jonathan Ajayi Captivates as Smee in FX’s Alien: Earth

British actor Jonathan Ajayi, 29, has captured audiences with his performance in the new sci-fi horror series Alien: Earth, available on FX and Hulu. Set two years prior to the iconic 1979 film Alien, the series explores the provocative theme of immortality through the lens of a mega-corporation named Prodigy. The company seeks to profit from a controversial project involving terminally ill children, who become the first batch of “immortal” humans known as the Lost Boys.
The narrative unfolds as these children, having their consciousness uploaded into adult-sized synthetic bodies, find themselves at the forefront of humanity’s initial encounter with extraterrestrial beings following a crash in southeast Asia. Ajayi portrays Smee, a character that is not only central to the plot but also represents a blend of innocence and complexity.
Auditioning with Authenticity
Ajayi’s journey to landing the role of Smee was marked by an unconventional audition approach. During a Zoom meeting with casting director Kate Rose James, he opted to embody the spirit of a child rather than merely imitate their behavior. “We had a scene in the show where I’m giving Slightly a flavor strip,” Ajayi recalls, referencing the childlike snack in the series. His idea was to reflect genuine childhood behavior, which led him to consume a can of Tango during the audition.
“I took a sip and said, ‘Hey broh, dhu yuu wan shum aysh kreem?’” he recalls, imitating a child’s way of speaking with a mouth full of food. His playful delivery won over James, who visibly reacted with delight. “Kate put her hands on her chest like, ‘He’s so sweet.’ It was so much fun,” Ajayi shares, reflecting on the moment that secured his role.
A Rising Star
Since graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2018, Ajayi has quickly gained recognition in the acting world. His portrayal of Smee, especially during the seventh episode where the character faces significant challenges, showcases his range and depth as an actor. As audiences tune into Alien: Earth, they are drawn not only to the high-stakes plot but also to Ajayi’s compelling performance.
Ajayi’s character is part of a narrative that tackles profound themes of existence, identity, and the ethics of immortality. The potential of these “Lost Boys” raises questions about humanity’s future and the moral implications of their existence, making the series a thought-provoking addition to the genre.
With his infectious energy and unique portrayal, Jonathan Ajayi is poised to become a significant figure in contemporary television. As Alien: Earth gains momentum, viewers can look forward to more from this talented actor. His journey from West London to the screen epitomizes the blend of creativity and authenticity that defines great storytelling.
