Disney Phasing Out Hulu by 2026: What Subscribers Should Know

Disney plans to discontinue the Hulu app by 2026, merging its content into the Disney+ platform. This shift marks a significant change in the streaming landscape, as Disney consolidates its offerings to streamline user experience. The Hulu brand will still exist, but its operations will be integrated into Disney+, where it will serve as a dedicated tab for adult-oriented content.

Hulu, which launched in 2007, was initially created as a counter to Netflix by a consortium that included Disney, Fox, and Comcast. The transition plan began on October 8, 2025, when Disney announced that Hulu would become the “global General Entertainment brand on Disney+.” This change replaces the Star brand in international markets, consolidating Disney’s global branding efforts. The redesigned Disney+ app will feature a top bar with various options tailored to subscribers’ interests. The Disney tab will focus on family-friendly content, while the Hulu tab will cater to adult viewers.

As Disney integrates Hulu into Disney+, users can expect new navigation features, including a “Live” hub for streamed shows and events. Additionally, Disney is introducing badges to highlight new series and contextual information about programming. Although not all users will see these updates immediately, Disney’s timeline suggests a swift rollout.

Concerns remain regarding the future of Hulu’s original content. The platform has produced numerous critically acclaimed series, including “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which has won multiple Emmy Awards. While much of this content may still be available under the Hulu brand within Disney+, there is speculation about potential changes in release schedules due to economic pressures in the entertainment industry.

During a 2025 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the need to focus on quality over quantity in programming. He stated, “It would be a far better experience when [Disney+ and Hulu] are combined by combining all of the program assets of both current apps.” This indicates a commitment to providing high-quality content while managing the overall volume of new releases.

As part of this transition, subscribers to Disney+ can anticipate a price increase. Iger informed investors that merging the platforms would create new “price elasticity,” suggesting that the integration may lead to adjustments in subscription costs.
