SPAR Launches Crypto Payments at 100 Swiss Stores with Binance
Swiss grocery shoppers can now use stablecoins and cryptocurrencies for their everyday purchases, thanks to a new partnership between SPAR, Binance Pay, and DFX.swiss. This collaboration enables customers to make payments at over 100 SPAR locations across Switzerland, marking a significant step in the integration of digital currencies into the retail sector.
This initiative represents the first nationwide rollout of a cryptocurrency payment system in Swiss grocery retail. The expansion is already underway, with plans for over 300 SPAR stores to support crypto payments in the coming months. Customers can now pay instantly using more than 100 supported cryptocurrencies, including popular euro- and dollar-backed stablecoins, through the Binance Pay app without incurring gas fees. Payments will be settled in Swiss Francs (CHF) or other currencies via DFX.swiss’s integration.
Transforming Retail Payments
André Scherrer, Managing Director of SPAR Switzerland, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Smart wallet payment solutions such as those offered by DFX in combination with Binance Pay will be the future: customers are increasingly asking for them, and merchants save around two-thirds of commission fees compared to card payments.”
As global demand for stablecoins and digital payment solutions grows, Switzerland is solidifying its position as a leader in cryptocurrency adoption. The country is increasingly moving beyond institutional finance to embrace digital assets in everyday consumer transactions. This shift aims to make it easier for both Swiss residents and international visitors to utilize cryptocurrencies for daily needs.
Jonas Juenger, Regional Director for Binance, noted the significance of this partnership. “As crypto payment adoption continues to grow, we’re proud to see our technology support such a trusted and widespread retail brand like SPAR. This collaboration shows how crypto is becoming part of everyday life—including grocery shopping in supermarkets—and highlights the powerful synergy between traditional retail and digital payment solutions, offering an enriched shopping experience.”
At the checkout, customers can complete their transactions by simply scanning DFX Swiss’s “OpenCryptoQR” using the Binance Pay app. The payment is processed instantly in the chosen cryptocurrency, with DFX.swiss facilitating conversion to CHF or any other fiat currency. This ensures that SPAR receives the full payment in fiat currency, streamlining the process for retailers.
Enhancing Consumer Experience
Cyrill Thommen, founder of DFX.swiss, shared his vision for the future of payments. “We believe crypto payments should feel as natural as any other form of payment, and this partnership makes that vision real. Our mission is to connect the world of digital assets with everyday transactions, and we’re proud to power one of Switzerland’s most established retail networks in this transformation.”
With this integration, grocery shopping becomes one of the most accessible real-world applications for cryptocurrency payments in Switzerland to date. SPAR’s diverse customer base can now enjoy a frictionless payment experience while retailers maintain the financial infrastructure they are already familiar with.
As this initiative unfolds, it is poised to reshape the shopping experience in Switzerland, making cryptocurrency a viable option for daily transactions. The collaboration between SPAR, Binance Pay, and DFX.swiss underscores a significant shift towards the mainstream acceptance of digital currencies in everyday retail environments.
