North Las Vegas Mayoral Candidate Focuses on Housing and Economy
North Las Vegas mayoral candidate Daniele Monroe-Moreno highlighted housing and the economy as pivotal issues for the city during a tour of small businesses on March 5, 2024. Monroe-Moreno, who is stepping down from her role as a fifth-term member of the Nevada Assembly, aims to transition from her current position to the mayor’s office. She officially announced her candidacy in July 2023, stating her commitment to address local concerns.
During her visit, Monroe-Moreno emphasized the need for good-paying jobs and housing stability for residents. “I’ll be the biggest cheerleader for the city and to bring in good-paying jobs so that North Las Vegas residents can actually work in the city that they live,” she stated. Monroe-Moreno toured six local businesses, including a barbershop, bakery, and pizzeria, engaging with owners and employees to better understand their challenges.
One of the noteworthy stops was at The After Market, an establishment that serves as both an affordable grocery store and food pantry. Owner DeWayne McCoy expressed enthusiasm for Monroe-Moreno’s candidacy, noting her long-term commitment to community support. “I’ve seen her reach out to be a support for places like The After Market,” he said, highlighting her dedication to local neighborhoods.
Addressing Economic Challenges
While touring The After Market, Monroe-Moreno discussed the potential impacts of tariffs imposed during the previous administration on local businesses. “It’s going to have a direct impact, and as a City Council, we have to make sure that we’re prepared for that,” she explained. Her approach includes fostering relationships with state and federal leaders to address economic challenges effectively.
At tsp. baking company, Monroe-Moreno participated in a light-hearted cupcake guessing game, showcasing her community engagement style. This visit also served as a platform for her to unveil her vision for “rent stabilization” in North Las Vegas. She explained how the policy would regulate rent increases, which is particularly crucial for seniors looking to retire in the city. “The rent’s going up $300, but the retirement check didn’t go up,” she noted, stressing the importance of stabilizing housing costs.
Monroe-Moreno’s experience as a landlord has shaped her perspective on housing issues. “Our home became a home that I was able to rent out for a number of years for families, and a number of them were single moms with children,” she shared, indicating her personal connection to housing challenges.
Community Development Initiatives
One pressing issue in North Las Vegas is the condition of Windsor Park, a historically Black community facing significant infrastructure challenges. The city council recently approved a development plan to provide new housing for residents, but there have been concerns about the handling of the neighborhood. Monroe-Moreno acknowledged the complexity of the situation and suggested seeking federal funding to support improvements. “The work with the housing division, what can the city do more working in collaboration with them to bring funding that’s maybe not at the state level?” she asked.
In addition to housing, Monroe-Moreno is in discussions with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) regarding a potential medical corridor on the northern side of the 215 Beltway, an area previously slated for a university campus.
As the city prepares for the upcoming mayoral election, the filing period for candidates opens on March 2, 2024. With Monroe-Moreno’s focus on community issues and economic development, her candidacy is set to bring a fresh perspective to North Las Vegas politics.
