Miami Hurricanes Claim State Championship, Eye National Title

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Miami Hurricanes have asserted their dominance in Florida football by defeating Florida State University 28-22 on October 7, 2023. Head coach Mario Cristobal celebrated the victory by posing for photos with his family in front of the scoreboard, which declared Miami the state champions.
After the game, Cristobal shared a moment of joy with athletic director Dan Radakovich, who exclaimed, “That was big,” while the visiting fans erupted in cheers. Cristobal took time to collect a printed sign reading “Back to Back State Champs!” as he emphasized the significance of the win. “It’s such a big deal,” he said. Yet, for Cristobal and his team, this is just the beginning, as they now set their sights on becoming serious contenders for the national championship.
Miami’s Impressive Track Record
The Hurricanes, currently ranked No. 3 nationally with a record of 5-0 and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), have achieved notable victories over Florida, South Florida, and Florida State in recent weeks. This marks the first time since 2001-2004 that Miami has defeated both the Gators and the Seminoles in consecutive years, a feat that holds significant weight in the state.
Despite the celebrations, Miami defensive back Jakobe Thomas reflected on the bigger goals ahead. He stated, “I know that we got bigger goals,” expressing the renewed optimism surrounding the program after years of uncertainty. The Hurricanes have struggled in the past, often failing to meet expectations despite moments of promise, such as rising to No. 2 in 2017 and contending for a playoff spot last season.
This season, Miami’s performance stands out, as they have defeated ranked opponents, including the No. 9 team (Notre Dame), No. 12 team (Florida), and No. 19 team (Florida State). Their victories against these teams have solidified their reputation and set a strong foundation for their championship aspirations.
Defensive Strength and Offensive Evolution
In the matchup against Florida State, the Hurricanes showcased their defensive prowess, limiting the Seminoles, who entered the game with the nation’s leading offense, to just 22 points and 404 total yards. Rueben Bain Jr., a standout defensive lineman, was crucial in applying pressure to the opposing quarterback, disrupting their game plan effectively.
While Miami’s ground game had been their strength earlier in the season, accumulating an average of three rushing touchdowns per game, they adapted their strategy against Florida State. Despite being held to just 97 rushing yards, quarterback Carson Beck, a transfer from Georgia, demonstrated his capabilities by completing 20 of 27 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. “He was on fire,” Cristobal praised, highlighting Beck’s pivotal role in the team’s success.
Three of Beck’s touchdown passes covered at least 20 yards, showcasing the explosive playmaking ability that Miami has often been known for. This adaptability and offensive evolution could prove vital as the Hurricanes aim for their first ACC championship and a national title since 2001.
Miami’s ability to win in different ways has been a significant development. In previous seasons, the team struggled with discipline and often succumbed to mistakes in crucial moments. This time, they displayed composure as they navigated Florida State’s late surge, which included 19 consecutive points scored in the fourth quarter. The Hurricanes did not panic; instead, they executed their game plan effectively, sealing the victory with a successful onside kick.
With the state championship now secured, Miami appears poised for greater achievements. Coach Cristobal has built a formidable roster, and the team’s confidence is evident. “Being a University of Miami Hurricane, it means that this game, you find a way to get it done,” he noted after the victory.
The Hurricanes’ journey continues, with their eyes firmly set on the future and the potential for championship glory. As they build on this victory, the excitement surrounding Miami football is palpable, and fans can only anticipate what lies ahead.
