Mammoth Secure Preseason Win Over Sharks with Late Rally

The Utah Mammoth triumphed over the San Jose Sharks with a final score of 6-4 in their preseason finale held at the Delta Center on Saturday. This match, marked by its ups and downs, showcased the Mammoth’s ability to regroup in a challenging situation, reflecting their growth over the past year.

Each period of the game unfolded like a distinct contest. The Mammoth started off with a rocky beginning, conceding an early goal. However, they quickly responded, scoring four goals before the end of the first period. The second period saw a resurgence from the Sharks, who netted three goals, momentarily silencing the home crowd. Yet, the Mammoth regained their composure in the third period, with crucial goals by Clayton Keller and Brandon Tanev, sealing their victory and concluding preseason play with two consecutive home wins.

Reflecting on past performances, the Mammoth were haunted by a similar scenario on October 28, 2024, when they relinquished a three-goal lead to the Sharks, ultimately losing in overtime. This time, they managed to hold on to their advantage, demonstrating maturity in their gameplay. Tanev pointed out the need for consistent effort, emphasizing that maintaining momentum is crucial.

The Mammoth’s tendency to ease off when ahead has been a concern. Last season, this led to several late-game collapses. During the match, moments like the Barclay Goodrow goal illustrated lapses in defensive intensity. Both Jack McBain and Nick Schmaltz failed to adequately backtrack, contributing to a 2-on-1 situation that could have been avoided.

Keller acknowledged the need for ongoing improvement: “Moving our feet, I think. That’s the biggest thing for us. We talked about it, and we’ll get better.” Coach André Tourigny expressed optimism about the team’s progress, noting, “We’ve come far. We won this game. If we can do that 82 times, we’re in good shape.”

Goaltender Karel Vejmelka faced some challenges during the game, with a save percentage of 0.787 across the preseason. While he has the physical skills to stop shots, confidence can play a significant role in a goaltender’s performance. “I was just fortunate enough to get a good bounce and maybe get a step on the guy,” Tanev remarked, crediting his teammates for setting him up for success.
