The Golden State Valkyries’ playoff run concluded in a heart-stopping finish on March 15, 2024, as they narrowly lost to the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx, 75-74, in Game 2 of their playoff series. Despite holding a double-digit lead in the final quarter at SAP Center in San Jose, the Valkyries were unable to secure the victory, marking the end of their inaugural season in the WNBA.

Golden State appeared poised for a crucial win after dominating the first half, where they established a commanding 41-28 lead. The Valkyries surged ahead with a strong offensive performance, hitting seven of their first 11 three-point attempts. Monique Billings, who came off the bench, led the charge with 15 points. Teammates Cecilia Zandalasini and Janelle Salaün contributed with 14 points each, while Veronica Burton added 13 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. In a setback, starting center Temi Fagbenie was a late scratch due to right knee pain.

The Valkyries began the game with enthusiasm, hitting five of their first six three-point shots. Kate Martin provided a crucial spark just before the end of the first quarter with a layup and a three-pointer, extending Golden State’s lead. Throughout the second quarter, Billings played a pivotal role, particularly in limiting Lynx star Napheesa Collier to just 10 points in the first half.

As the game progressed, Minnesota managed to reduce the Valkyries’ lead to eight in the third quarter. Despite this pressure, Golden State maintained a 14-point advantage heading into the final period. That advantage quickly evaporated as the Lynx opened the fourth quarter with an explosive 11-0 run, prompting Valkyries Coach Natalie Nakase to call a timeout.

Golden State responded with a step-back jumper from Zandalasini, followed by a transition three from Kaila Charles, restoring an eight-point lead. Unfortunately for the Valkyries, Minnesota’s resilience was too strong. The Lynx outscored Golden State 15-6 in the closing minutes, culminating in the dramatic finish where Zandalasini’s fadeaway jumper at the buzzer failed to find the net.

With this victory, Minnesota advances to face the winner of the series between the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty. For the Valkyries, the journey ends, but their inaugural season in the WNBA has been filled with promise and excitement. As they look towards the future, the team will undoubtedly reflect on the lessons learned during this competitive playoff experience.
