Emmys ‘In Memoriam’ Segment Draws Criticism for Notable Omissions

The recent Emmy Awards featured a heartfelt “In Memoriam” segment introduced by Felicia Rashad, honoring numerous television legends who passed away since the last broadcast. Among those remembered was Rashad’s “Cosby Show” co-star, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, highlighting the enduring impact of these artists. Rashad expressed, “Even though they may no longer be here with us, we can all smile knowing that their impact will remain.”
While the segment paid tribute to icons like Teri Garr, David Lynch, Anne Burrell, and George Wendt, it also sparked disappointment among fans due to the absence of several prominent figures.
Notable Names Missing from the Tribute
Viewers took to social media to voice their outrage over the omissions, with one user on X stating their frustration at the exclusion of prolific actor Graham Greene. The actor, known for his roles in “Northern Exposure,” “Longmire,” and “Dances With Wolves,” passed away in early September 2023.
Actress Holly Robinson Peete also expressed her dismay at the lack of acknowledgment for her friend, Dr. Danielle Spencer, a cast member from “What’s Happening!!” She stated, “We will honor her, even if they didn’t.” Additional notable absences included Hulk Hogan, actor Jonathan Joss from “King of the Hill,” Jerry Adler from “The Sopranos,” horror icon Tony Todd, and Jay North from “Dennis the Menace.”
Social media reactions highlighted the significance of these omissions. One Reddit user remarked, “WTF,” in response to the exclusion of Lynne Marie Stewart, who had a remarkable career with credits in “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
Focus on Television Figures
While the segment aimed to honor television artists, it also left out several prominent film figures, including Gene Hackman, Val Kilmer, and director Jeff Baena. Critics speculate that these omissions were made to prioritize actors with more extensive television credits.
A representative from the Television Academy, responsible for the Emmy Awards, was not immediately available for comment regarding the selection process for the “In Memoriam” segment. However, the Academy maintains an online “In Memoriam” database on its official website, listing all the artists who were not featured in the televised tribute.
As fans reflect on the contributions of those who were honored and those who were overlooked, the discussion surrounding the “In Memoriam” segment underscores the ongoing impact these artists have had on television and the lives of viewers.
