Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is positioned strongly for re-election, holding a significant 50-point lead over her challenger, Josh Kraft, according to a recent survey by Emerson College Polling. The poll, conducted ahead of the mayoral election scheduled for September 9, 2023, shows Wu with 72% support compared to Kraft’s 22%. This represents a substantial increase of 29% in Wu’s lead since February.

The poll reveals that nearly three in four voters in Boston view Wu favorably, while Kraft faces a challenging landscape with 58% of respondents expressing an unfavorable opinion of him. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted that Wu has effectively communicated her case for re-election over the past seven months, while Kraft has struggled to broaden his appeal.

Changing Demographics and Voter Opinions

The survey highlights a noteworthy shift in voter demographics since February. Among white voters, support for Wu has surged from a near tie, where she held 39% to Kraft’s 37%, to a commanding lead of 74% to 22%. Wu’s support among minority groups has also experienced significant growth; she has gained seven points among Hispanic voters, now at 61%, while her backing among Black voters has risen to 79%. Asian voters show even stronger support, with Wu jumping from 58% to 81%.

Wu’s approval rating during her first term stands at an impressive 66%. Additionally, the poll indicates that 67% of voters in Boston support her sanctuary city policy, and a notable 77% oppose former President Donald Trump‘s proposal to send the National Guard into the city.

The full results and methodology of the Emerson College Polling survey will be published on their website at 6 a.m. EST on August 29, 2023. As the election date approaches, Wu’s substantial lead suggests she has successfully solidified her position among Boston voters, while Kraft continues to seek ways to enhance his standing in the race.
