Beloved Artist Betsy Anderson Passes Away at 89, Leaving Legacy
Elizabeth “Betsy” Midlam Anderson, a celebrated artist and devoted family member, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, at the age of 89 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The daughter of Ed and Agnus Midlam from Lake Charles, Louisiana, Betsy was known for her deep love for her family, her extraordinary artistic talent, and her adventurous spirit.
Betsy Anderson was married to Colonel (Ret) Edwin M. Anderson Jr. for an impressive 68 years. Together, they embarked on numerous journeys around the world, enriching their lives with experiences and exploration. Her marriage to Colonel Anderson, a veteran of the United States Air Force, began in Lake Charles and took them to various locations throughout his military career, ultimately settling in the Washington, D.C. area.
Born in 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland, Betsy developed a passion for travel and learning from an early age. She pursued her love for art at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, where she studied art and art history. Her talent as an artist flourished, leading her to become one of the nation’s finest Impressionistic painters. Throughout her career, her works touched the hearts of thousands and were exhibited and sold across the United States and internationally.
Betsy’s artistic contributions were recognized by prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian and various U.S. Embassies in Paris, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. In 2016, the City of Alexandria honored her with the title of “Living Legend,” acknowledging her significant influence in the arts community.
In addition to her artistic achievements, Betsy cherished her family above all. She was a loving sister to Mary and a devoted mother to her three children: Betsy, West, and Alison. Betsy’s legacy continues through her eight grandchildren—Mark, Mitch, Marianne, Hannah, Ashley, Haley, Mac, and Heidi—and her five great-grandchildren: Samuel, Major, Vivienne, Alice, and Rush.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 10 a.m. on September 6, 2025, at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Shreveport.
