Mississippi Deploys 200 National Guard Troops to Washington, D.C.

Mississippi has become the fourth state to deploy National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., sending approximately 200 soldiers to assist with federal law enforcement efforts. The decision follows announcements from three other Republican-led states—West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio—which have pledged to send hundreds of their own National Guard members as part of a broader initiative under the Trump administration aimed at addressing crime and immigration in the nation’s capital.

Governor Tate Reeves announced the deployment on March 15, 2024, stating that “crime is out of control there, and it’s clear something must be done to combat it.” This move aligns with President Donald Trump‘s executive order declaring a “crime emergency” in the District of Columbia, which initiated a federal intervention into local policing practices.

Prior to Mississippi’s announcement, West Virginia had committed to sending between 300 to 400 troops, while South Carolina and Ohio each pledged 200 and 150 troops, respectively. This deployment builds on Trump’s directive for 800 National Guard troops to bolster federal policing efforts.

Federal Policing Initiative and Local Response

The Trump administration’s approach includes a controversial directive for local police to cooperate with federal agents on immigration enforcement, a move that contradicts local laws in D.C. prohibiting such collaboration. Trump expressed his viewpoint on social media, asserting that “D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers” and emphasized the need for federal oversight to restore order.

In response, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her skepticism about the administration’s intentions. During a press conference, she stated, “We don’t have any authority over the D.C. Guard or any other guards, but I think it makes the point that this is not about D.C. crime.” Bowser called for a focus on violent crime rather than immigration enforcement, urging clarity from the administration regarding its objectives.

National Guard members have previously assisted local law enforcement with crowd control and patrolling key areas such as the National Mall and Union Station. Their roles have been limited thus far, raising questions about the necessity of additional troops in the capital.

Federal Agent Activity and Community Concerns

Since the beginning of the operation, federal agents from various agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, have been active in D.C. They have reported making 380 arrests within the first week of deployment. The White House has highlighted these efforts, claiming that law enforcement partners are making the city safer, with Attorney General Pam Bondi noting that “Washington, D.C. is getting safer every night.”

However, the administration has faced criticism regarding the conduct of some federal agents, particularly in high-profile incidents where individuals were arrested while wearing masks. Bowser has requested that D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith seek clarification from federal authorities about the use of masked officers, emphasizing the importance of transparency in law enforcement.

As tensions rise, protests have emerged in response to the increased federal presence in the city. Demonstrators gathered in Dupont Circle over the weekend, voicing their opposition to the deployment of National Guard troops and the actions of federal agents.
