Health officials in Massachusetts have issued a warning regarding a rare and potentially deadly infection caused by the flesh-eating bacteria known as Vibrio vulnificus. The alert follows an incident involving an individual who contracted the infection, likely after exposure to the bacteria while visiting the beach at Buzzards Bay, located near Cape Cod.

On August 13, 2023, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed this case, marking it as an “extremely rare” occurrence. Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding this bacterium, which typically resides in warm, salt, or brackish waters along the Atlantic coast.

Understanding Vibrio vulnificus Risks
