San Diego Law Enforcement Hosts Gun Safety Event on August 23
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is organizing a gun safety event on August 23, 2023, aimed at removing unwanted firearms from local communities. The event will take place at the La Mesa Civic Center, located at 4825 Date Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This initiative involves collaboration with several law enforcement agencies, including the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the La Mesa Police Department, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the Sycuan Tribal Police Department.
Individuals who turn in working firearms during the event will receive gift cards as an incentive—$100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, while assault weapons will be exchanged for $200 gift cards. The Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that participants will remain anonymous and that no questions will be asked about the firearms being turned in.
Event Details and Safety Measures
As part of the safety protocols, participants are advised to place unloaded firearms in the trunk of their vehicles before approaching the designated area. Law enforcement officers will provide further instructions upon arrival. All firearms collected during the event will be securely destroyed to prevent any potential misuse.
In addition to the firearm exchange, the event will offer free cable locks to participants while supplies last. This is an important step in promoting gun safety and responsible ownership, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The event aims to engage the community in a proactive dialogue about gun safety and to mitigate the risks associated with unwanted firearms.
The collaboration between various law enforcement agencies underscores a unified approach to addressing gun safety concerns in the region. This event represents a critical opportunity for residents to contribute to community safety while also receiving tangible benefits for their participation.
For those interested in attending, further details can be obtained through the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and affiliated law enforcement agencies. This initiative not only aims to reduce the number of unwanted firearms on the streets but also fosters a community-oriented approach to public safety.
