McDowell Clarifies Miscommunication with Hocevar at Watkins Glen
Michael McDowell addressed his recent contact with teammate Carson Hocevar during the Watkins Glen race, clarifying that the incident stemmed from a miscommunication. In an interview with Dustin Long from NBC Sports, McDowell described the moment in Turn 1, stating, “It was just miscommunication and misjudged it. I thought [Hocevar] was actually rolling out to let me go by, and he was rolling out to try to get a run.” He acknowledged that the misunderstanding led to contact, emphasizing it was unintentional and not what either driver desired.
The incident occurred during the final stage of the NASCAR Cup Series race on August 20, 2023. Following the collision, Hocevar expressed his frustration over the radio, instructing his team not to let McDowell near him. On August 23, in a media session, Hocevar confirmed that he had not yet spoken to McDowell about the incident. “He wanted to sit down at Richmond,” Hocevar explained. “I’m gone racing, and he’s gone as well. Maybe it’s best-case scenario that we’re both gone.”
Hocevar downplayed the altercation, stating it did not seem significant to him. He noted that they were both competing fiercely for position in the final lap and corner. “I can play defense for one corner to try to get the spot,” he added.
As both drivers look to secure a playoff spot in the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series races, McDowell and Hocevar face pressure to perform. McDowell, who won the prestigious 2021 Daytona 500, has qualified for the playoffs in both 2021 and 2023. In contrast, Hocevar is in his second full season in the Cup Series and is still pursuing his first race victory.
McDowell’s continued success and Hocevar’s aspirations underscore the competitive nature of the series as they prepare for their next challenges. While the contact at Watkins Glen has sparked discussion, both drivers seem focused on their upcoming performances, eager to move past the incident and concentrate on their racing goals.
