Trump Claims Xi Assured No Taiwan Invasion During His Presidency

Former President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would not invade Taiwan while he remains in office. Trump made these remarks during an interview on November 3, 2023, with Fox News’ “Special Report.” This conversation took place in anticipation of his meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the interview, Trump expressed confidence in Xi’s commitment, saying, “He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’” He added, “I appreciate that,” but noted that Xi also mentioned, “But I am very patient, and China is very patient.” The timeline of when Xi made these comments was not specified, although both leaders had their first confirmed telephone call in June 2021 during Trump’s second term in the White House.
The relationship between China and Taiwan remains a critical issue. China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and has vowed to pursue reunification, potentially by force. Taiwan, in contrast, strongly rejects these claims and operates as a separate governance system.
In response to Trump’s comments, the Chinese Embassy in Washington emphasized the importance of the Taiwan issue within the context of China-U.S. relations. Spokesperson Liu Pengyu stated, “The U.S. government should adhere to the one-China principle and the three U.S.-China joint communiqués, handle Taiwan-related issues prudently, and earnestly safeguard China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
The United States remains Taiwan’s primary arms supplier and international ally. Despite this support, the U.S. does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, following the diplomatic acknowledgment of the one-China policy.
Trump’s comments reflect ongoing tensions in U.S.-China relations, especially regarding Taiwan. The implications of his assertions could have significant consequences for future diplomatic efforts and military posturing in the region.
