Cast of “The First Lady” Delivers Strong Performances at Script Reading
The cast of MBN’s upcoming political drama, “The First Lady,” recently captivated audiences during their first script reading session. The series, which is set to premiere on September 24, 2023, explores the tumultuous events that unfold when a president-elect unexpectedly demands a divorce from his wife just as she is poised to assume the role of first lady.
Set against the backdrop of the 67 days leading up to the presidential inauguration, the drama delves into the couple’s escalating conflict while unraveling intricate political conspiracies and long-hidden family secrets. The reading featured contributions from director Lee Ho Hyun and writer Kim Hyung Wan, who collaborated with a talented cast including Eugene, Ji Hyun Woo, and Lee Min Young.
In her role as Cha Soo Yeon, a woman who helps her husband secure the presidency only to face a shocking divorce demand, Eugene showcased her ability to navigate a wide emotional spectrum. Her performance, marked by a commanding presence, captured the character’s ambition, confusion, and eventual rage.
Sharing the screen with her, Ji Hyun Woo portrays Hyun Min Chul, a former factory worker turned president-elect. His performance blends gentleness with intensity, creating a compelling character that resonates with audiences.
Lee Min Young takes on the role of Shin Hae Rin, the president-elect’s loyal secretary. Her calm demeanor and professional delivery highlight the character’s complex nature while adding to the drama’s tension.
The supporting cast further enriches the narrative. Han Soo Ah plays Lee Hwa Jin, Cha Soo Yeon’s stylist and admirer, while Shin So Yul embodies Son Min Joo, a journalist who knows both main characters intimately. Kim Ki Bang appears as Yoon Ki Joo, a friend from Hyun Min Chul’s past, and Oh Seung Eun rounds out the cast as Choi Myung Joo, the designer behind Cha Soo Yeon’s wardrobe. Each actor contributes depth and authenticity, enhancing the overall storytelling.
The production team expressed excitement about the series, stating, “The First Lady will be a sensational series with a fresh and unprecedented premise: a divorce battle between Korea’s ‘first couple.’” They noted that the cast displayed remarkable synergy during the script reading, instilling confidence in the project’s potential.
As anticipation builds for the premiere, viewers can expect bold character transformations and a unique narrative that breaks new ground in the genre. The drama promises to engage audiences with its intricate plot and dynamic performances, making it a highly anticipated addition to MBN’s lineup.
